3⭐️ If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be “overstimulating” lol. I think there were so many POVs and so many subplots that they all started to feel chaotic and rushed, which is unusual for SJM. It felt very cheesy at times and like the big plot points where the reader gains important information were almost too easy and straightforward… the payoff wasn’t as satisfying because it was just given to you instead of having to work for it. And although I get the connections that were made to other parts of the greater Maasverse, it felt like SJM sacrificed core parts of her characters to reach a desired outcome in this story, instead of remaining true to who they are and finding another way to get to the same results. She ended up compromising all her character building that took place up to this point which was confusing. It was honestly a pretty disappointing read imo, but not an inherently bad book, which is why I gave it 3 stars instead of something lower. I think subjectively, it just did not meet the high standards all her other books have set as the precedent. But hey, not all her books can be a five star read, right? I didn’t mind the overall plot, I just didn’t care for the execution as much and found it chaotic at times. I’ll be curious to see what lies ahead in her next books!
